MAX Forest has simple rules: users can walk or make digital currency payments within the DApp to accumulate green energy. The energy can then be used to redeem and cultivate virtual saplings. In MAX Forest V1, users can gain green energy through their step counts.

A study published in _The Lancet Public Health_ by the Steps for Health Collaborative found that there is a connection between the number of steps taken, walking speed, and health outcomes in adults of different ages. The study found that adults under 60 may not experience significant improvements in longevity beyond a daily step count of 8000–10000, while adults over 60 may not see further benefits beyond a daily step count of 6000–8000. Based on these findings, MAX Forest has implemented a step-energy conversion mechanism that takes into account age-specific daily step recommendations.

MAX Forest has established a daily step limit of 8000 steps for generating energy in order to promote user well-being and prevent over-exercise. Any steps taken beyond this limit will not be rewarded with energy. The DApp will track users' step counts three times throughout the day (8:00, 16:00, 24:00) based on their time zone and convert the steps into green energy using a rate of 100 steps to 1 energy. With each generation, an energy bubble will be displayed above the virtual sapling, showing the energy value within it.

Upon logging into the DApp, users will see a floating island and their own virtual tree. The size of the sapling reflects the amount of green energy that has been collected through the user's daily steps. To further enhance the experience and encourage engagements, MAX Forest offers various tree NFTs in its store where users can purchase the NFTs with their green energy. These NFTs, of which there are four available in MAX Forest V1, can be used to dress up the user's virtual sapling and provide a boost to the generation of green energy. Each NFT has three levels, representing different stages of tree growth and providing varying bonuses to energy generation. Therefore, by purchasing higher level NFTs, users can more quickly accumulate green energy and watch their sapling grow faster.

Users can also exchange their green energy for MAX coins in the DApp wallet, at a current exchange rate of 16:1. However, as noted in the DApp pop-up notifications, the returns from direct exchanges are not as high as those from planting trees.

**Prickly Pear**: Opuntia, commonly called prickly pear or pear cactus, plays a crucial role in combating desertification and soil erosion. It produces nutritious fruits with medicinal properties that are often used in Mexican cuisine.

**Ficus**: The Ficus tree is known for its ability to thrive in the most challenging environments, such as the dry and hot Arizona desert. ## Current impact of climate change and solution

Climate change is one of the most critical global issues today, and the impacts of global warming caused by CO2 emissions are increasingly significant including the rising of sea level, increasing in ocean acidification, etc. Research done by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown that even if greenhouse gas emission was to stop completely, the surface air temperature would continue to increase and remain elevated for several decades, which could induce crop reduction and food crisis, and the rising of sea level is forcing people to abandon some of the most populated areas.

The United Nations have proposed the 17 UN Global Goals which are to be reached by 2030, in which governments are required to reduce the speed of climate change and protect resources on the planet.

# What is Metaverse for Low Income People?

The concept of metaverse is not new. In fact, it was firstly introduced by science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his fiction book in 1992, and later in 2011, a novel named _Ready Player One_ took another deep dive into a different perspective of the metaverse. However, it was not until 2021 that the metaverse became the trend of the internet, when the world-famous Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg decided to rebrand his company to **Meta**. # Maxity 2.0 - The start of a Symbiotic Metaverse at the House of Lords

On the 27th of June, Charity NFT Marketplace Maxity was honoured to host a grand VIP event at the House of Lords in London to discuss the opportunities of blockchain technology for the charity sector. It was the first blockchain event held by Maxity and hosted by Baroness Uddin at the House of Lords. The event brought together Parliamentarians and charity founders to explore how non-profits can leverage an innovative new fundraising model to their advantage. Maxity also announced that it can now accept card payments in its second version of the platform, 2.0 and is pioneering a volunteer-to-earn model. This is an exciting milestone for Maxity as it continues to build its Symbiotic Metaverse — a world where businesses and individuals can directly interact and transact without the involvement of a third party.

The launch of Maxity 2.0 highlighted the significance of a symbiotic Metaverse development and the potential global impact of blockchain technology on the charity sector. Baroness Uddin, Chair of the APPG on Metaverse and Web 3.0, Member of the House of Lords said, “Maxity's development, vision, and potential effect for charity organisations is a commendable ambition.”

Professor XiaoLan Fu from University of Oxford referred to technology and responsible innovation in the fight against grand challenges. She welcomed Maxity's firm commitment to social responsibility in support of causes related to worldwide health crisis, the global pandemic, addressing the needs of women and children, people without shelter, economic injustices, lack of access to basic and quality education as well as clean water.

Several notable people and distinguished guests participated, including Baroness Sandip Verma, Member of the House of Lords, Dr Lisa Cameron, Scottish National Party politician and member of the Parliament, Mr. Abbas Kazmi-Serial Entrepreneur and Founder of Collegiate Capital, Mr. Assad Saifullah Khan, Zahra Saifullah Khan and Aly Saifullah Khan from the Saif Group and Mr. Vijay Goel-Founder and Chairman of Singhania and Co., and others.

At the event, Maxity announced its launch of the second version of the platform, 2.0 alongside a pioneering volunteer-to-earn model.

Professor Yu Xiong, Director of Maxity detailed the concept of Metaverse and Symbiotic Metaverse and explained how blockchain technology can be effectively used to create social and economic value for all citizens.

## Paying by card to purchase a non-fungible token

Justinas Kairys, Head of Development said, “Maxity is the most innovative blockchain application for social responsibility. Compared to other big platforms, Maxity prevents any automated activities like bot trading. To ensure decentralisation, Maxity stores NFT metadata on distributed file system (IPFS), and the royalty fee mechanism is based on smart contracts and executed in fully decentralised way”.

He explained the importance of promoting decentralisation and demonstrated the process of purchasing an NFT with a card. The option to buy an NFT without setting up a crypto wallet is now available on Maxity. He also explained NFT gift aid model and referenced tax relief demand in UK and USA.

Founders of Penny Appeal, Turbo Ghana, Jewins Women 2 Women, Dongguan Disabled People’s Association all highlighted their charitable work and welcomed the unique opportunity of Maxity platform in securing funding through the blockchain allowing them to continue to provide critical services.

Ruth Moji Obasa, CEO of Jewins Women 2 Women, spoke about how an NFT purchased on the Maxity platform can boost her organisation’s capacity to provide food as well as vocational training for women who are disadvantaged in Badagry, Lagos, Nigeria. Also, Li Zikang, founder of Dong Guan Disabled People Association which supports children with cerebral palsy said, “with NFTs purchased from their collection on Maxity, 60 % of the donation will be used to help children and creating online rehabilitation training and the remaining 40% will be used for Yourturn app building purposes”.

“This is a critical time for charities to get involved in the NFT space. Maxity is unlike any other NFT marketplace because it focuses exclusively on charitable causes, and the creators, charities, are verified. This creates strong trust among buyers,” Natasha Ryan, Head of Partnerships at Maxity said.

# Why non-fungible tokens could be a game changer for social justice

To those promoting social justice, the terms crypto, blockchain, digital wallets, digital currencies, minting and listing NFTs may seem like something from a different, made-up, world. Whilst these phrases appear far from the realities of humanitarian emergencies like famine or sexual violence in conflict, they are rapidly becoming fully integrated with what is perceived as reality.

Here's why.

## Mobile access leapfrogging and the evolution of the internet

Most conflicts occur in the global south. This is also where the need for social protection is the highest. Looking at sub-Saharan Africa, about 38% of the over 1 billion people on the continent live on [less than 60 USD a month](https://data.worldbank.org/country/ZG). At the same time, almost every other person in the region (that's almost 500 million people) is subscribed to [mobile services](https://www.gsma.com/mobileeconomy/sub-saharan-africa/). Including those with access to a phone, this figure is closer to 7 in 10 people. Over 40% of the population is under 15 years old, so the figure of those on mobile subscriptions is in its infancy. More people have [mobile phones than electricity](https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2017/11/08/in-much-of-sub-saharan-africa-mobile-phones-are-more-common-than-access-to-electricity) in the region. Populations have leapfrogged from negligible access to basic technologies like running water in their village or landlines installed, to suddenly being able to follow social media influencer trends from the other side of the globe in real-time. The same can be said for some areas transiting from no electricity source at all to green energy like solar power. These are significant advances in technology for regions that have, up until recently, been very much left behind.

International institutions have sought to close this technological gap partly by recognising the need to facilitate internet access. In 2016, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution that [calls upon all States to promote digital literacy and to facilitate access to information on the Internet](https://ap.ohchr.org/documents/dpage_e.aspx?si=a/hrc/res/32/13). At the time of drafting, the world had already seen the first phase of the internet, Web1, which mainly consisted of users interacting with the internet through reading it. The UN resolution conceived of the right to the internet at the height of Web2. Web2, the current phase, is defined as the second phase of the internet, where users are encouraged to post their information and interact with what they read by liking and commenting on blogs, and of course, a few global social media platforms. (These platforms own the data you share, an important feature of Web2, and has led to various consumer data protection legislation.) Whilst some states have more resources to be able to provide internet access than others, accessing the internet was still acknowledged as crucial for all. So far, so good.

Enter… Web3. Moving on from getting information from the internet to interacting with that information and your information being owned by a few platforms, Web3 is about users owning the internet. With the help of public and transparent databases to verify information (blockchains), Web3 promises an internet that is decentralised, democratic and peer to peer. Instead of using social media platforms for free and having their data sold, users can perform actions in Web3 that contribute to upholding the very system they are using. These actions are performed in exchange for cryptocurrency, in the same way you currently provide your data in exchange for using social media services. In Web3, you don’t sell your data, you perform actions, and in return you receive cryptocurrency or other digital assets — like non-fungible tokens.

Web3 is essentially a digital world of transactional ownership, which can be bought in exchange for completing tasks that contribute to running that world, or in exchange for fiat money (traditional currencies like USD or GBP) that you use to purchase cryptocurrency. What do you then own? You might own an actual currency, like Bitcoin. But you may also own a different type of digital asset — an asset that you can’t necessarily exchange for another of its type, namely a non-fungible token. This is a token where your ownership is recorded on that public database, and no one can question that you own that token, because there is only one token identity of its kind. An NFT can be embodied by anything, and until now, we’ve seen representations in the form of digital art, music, videos and tickets.

## The introduction of NFTs and their marketplaces

Whilst the technology behind non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has existed for some time, the hype around NFTs came to a peak in 2021. Digital assets represented by some form of media sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece. Why would anyone use real money to buy a digital photo which they could simply take a screenshot of and download to their laptop, you ask? Well — the token, the T in NFT, can be used in a digital portfolio, showing the verified ownership of that token, and who sold it. The owner can publicly show their ownership of that item, on social media or other platforms, or list it for sale later.

NFTs are available on what are called NFT marketplaces. There are several, the biggest one being OpenSea. OpenSea has publicly said that 80% of the representations of its tokens using its popular free minting tool [are scams](https://twitter.com/opensea/status/1486843204062236676), placing a large onus on users to research the accounts selling the NFTs, ensuring these are genuine and bona fide. Other platforms require those who post NFTs to go through a process verifying their identities, to prevent fraudulent NFTs from being ‘minted’ (created in that public database). Whilst the technology itself is secure, traceable and transparent, it is by its very nature decentralised, and very new. There are users creating fake duplicates of NFT projects and some level of buyer scrutiny will always be necessary. This is the case for Web2 services as well.

Whilst the largest group of buyers are still those looking to buy an NFT as an investment, a great deal of revenue from big NFT projects in 2021 was donated to charitable causes. This gave the founders at NFT marketplace Maxity an idea. What if there was a marketplace for NFTs dedicated only to charity? And, what if the NFTs on that marketplace only came from non-for-profit organisations that had been verified?

## The new way of giving

You may be thinking — sure, but no charity is going to enter an unregulated space using technology that is easily subject to malpractice. Certainly, the not-for-profit sector has not been renowned for its swift adoption of new and innovative technologies. Still, worldwide national lockdowns forced a much quicker implementation of available technology to continue to deliver services that communities relied on, that otherwise would not have been feasible. Whilst global production slowed down during the pandemic, the easing of restrictions has inevitably led to all sectors returning to work with a stronger skill set in using technology, including the charity sector. In many sectors, printing physical documents is a thing of the past, even in countries with power cuts and spotty internet.

The NFT market was in what is called a 'bull' market in 2021 and has over the last few months entered a 'bear market' phase. This means that sales have drastically reduced. Given how inflated the prices of NFTs had become, this was bound to happen. The current bear market allows more mainstream users to enter, purchasing, selling and trading NFTs for say $100 each, instead of $10,000. That is what the Maxity founders want: to provide a platform for NFTs to be bought, sold and traded by the mainstream user, with the proceeds going directly to the charity that listed the tokens for sale (minus a 2% platform fee, which all marketplaces charge). As more users enter Web3 and the world of NFTs, Maxity offers those interested in supporting a cause a whole new way of giving.

The Charities Aid Foundation stated that [1 in 3 adults donated in 2020.](https://www.cafonline.org/about-us/publications/2021-publications/caf-world-giving-index-2021) There's been a shift of donors from the global north to the global south in recent years, with Indonesia topping the charts. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the pandemic, donations have increased and the appetite for mobile giving has never been higher. Web3 and NFTs, then, give non-for-profit organisations a never-seen-before platform to foster global communities of donors, virtually. Particularly grassroots organisations now can access and grow funding that would never have been available to them in the past. In return, donors get a digital token of appreciation for their donation, that they can collect and use as they navigate social media, showing their participation in a community –indeed also eventually in the Metaverse (but we'll leave thatworld for another time). They can also list it for sale later on, leading to further funding for the not-for-profit. Sounds like a win-win, right?

It is, and this new technology has the potential to have a significant impact; particularly for organisations operating in unstable economies, and see savings eroded by inflation or economic policies challenged by corruption. It also provides an opportunity to promote local artist talent, empowering artists who otherwise would remain unnoticed. If applied conscientiously, the technology behind NFTs could be the largest innovation the sector has ever seen. Instead of funding going primarily to big, established organisations because of the strict requirements on due diligence set by large donors, grassroots organisations now have a potentially completely different donor base.

Tapping into the new way of giving requires that organisations have an interest in technology, innovative ways of fundraising, and in fostering that community of donors. It requires thought behind the design and marketing of the NFTs that are minted and listed. Very simply, it also requires an internet connection. Whilst this is just the beginning, there is no question that this is the future. Done well, quickly, and efficiently, this is a game changer for the non-for-profit sector raising funds, including humanitarian causes.

Justinas Kairys — Head of development from the Maxity team gave a presentation about Maxity and introduced the platform to the NFT community in London. He spoke about how Maxity intends to migrate to Solana and Ethereum blockchain in the near future. He also gave a detailed description of the project road map and its tokenomics model, announced few potential collaborations with well-known influencers in the crypto space and highlighted the advantages of Maxity platform over other marketplaces.

The event generated a lot of interest within the London NFT community; several NFTs were purchased during the event. People from all kinds of backgrounds including the banking sector, crypto world, asset management, property development and charity organisations attended the event and helped raise awareness about the Maxity platform. Maxity happens to be the first charity marketplace of its kind, and is delighted to partner with charitable organisations to assist them in realising the potential of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in raising funds.

Maxity did 6 NFT airdrop giveaways. The NFT's for giveaway were from a remarkable project called “Seed, Leaf and Tree Girl” created by Charity DAO. The project highlights the disastrous effects of deforestation. The story behind this project aims to draw attention to the harmful effects of logging, farming and wildlife which destroyed more than 11.1 million hectares (27 million acres) of trees in 2021. This continues to lead to serious climate change, reduce biodiversity ,and bring disaster for indigenous people all over the world.

# Maxity, The World's First DAO-based Charity NFT Marketplace, Announces Its Pre-Launch

London, UK, 24 January 2022 The forthcoming launch of Maxity, the world's first DAO-based NFT (Non-Fungible Tokens) marketplace that has been created exclusively for 'good causes', charities and philanthropy-minded NFT projects, was officially announced on 20 January 2022.

Developed in London by a team of world-class developers, Maxity is a blockchain and smart contract-powered decentralised marketplace that will enable charities and NGOs across the globe to enter and benefit from the exciting and booming world of NFTs. Maxity will officially launch on 31 of March, 2022.

The Maxity NFT marketplace will provide an exciting new channel for charities and NGOs to seek charitable support and to share their passion with both existing and new fanbases. Maxity will enable a whole host of good causes — such as those working to combat environmental and humanitarian issues — to engage with donors and raise funds.

The forthcoming launch of Maxity was revealed at an event on the UK's Magna Carta Island (which is being re-envisioned as the 'Blockchain Island') on 20 January 2022. Co-presenters Mark Ryan (Founder of Turbo Ghana) and Justin Kairys (Maxity's Head of Development) received highly encouraging support from the event's 80+ attendees, which included elite financial experts, private and institutional investors, academics and developers from the blockchain world.

Maxity will support charities during the entire ‘NFT’ process with a ‘one-stop-shop’ solution to include the creating, collecting, promoting and selling of their NFTs. Maxity will also enable charities to generate income through the accrual of resales on the ‘secondary’ market.

Compared to other NFT platforms, Maxity will offer what it believes to be the lowest transaction fee of just 2%. In doing so, Maxity is a very attractive solution because charities will keep the majority of the funds raised through the NFTs they have created.

Benefits to both charities and donors will be further realised because of the network the platform has been built on — Polygon. Polygon, which connects blockchains and decentralized applications to Ethereum via sidechains, enables faster minting of NFTs, involves near-zero gas fees, and works within a large Polygon-based NFT ecosystem.

Furthermore, Maxity has been established as a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). DAOs operate as organisations represented by rules encoded as a transparent computer program, controlled by the organisation members, and not influenced by a central government. As the rules are embedded into the code, no managers are needed, thus removing any bureaucracy or hierarchy hurdles.
